Mapping No. 17

Within a span of two years between the coup and May 31, 2023, at least 2,248 clashes occurred in 61 townships where China-Myanmar Economic Corridor (CMEC) projects are set to be implemented or where other Chinese projects are already underway. Of these 2,248 clashes, at least 1,486 broke out within the first 14 months following the coup (from February 2021 to March 2022) while at least 762 clashes broke out in the subsequent 14-month period (from April 2022 to May 2023). The comparison of the two different 14-month periods indicates that clashes declined by more than half.
