In this volume, the Myanmar Quarterly provides the full transcript of Dominic Faulder’s interviews with NLD leader U Kyi Maung (1920-2014) conducted just after the general election in 1990. The transcript is an important historical document. With special thanks to Dominic Faulder, the full interview is available in English along with a Burmese translation for the first time. The published interview contained only excerpts selected by Asiaweek editors. The interview became well-known for its reference to “Nuremberg trial” involving junta leaders. A military tribunal later charged U Kyi Maung with actions inciting or attempting to harm national security or order and sentenced him to twenty year prison term. This volume of the Myanmar Quarterly includes a special feature on U Kyi Maung. In addition to the full interview, a separate article by Dominic Faulder recalls his meetings with U Kyi Maung. The original Asiaweek excerpted interview (July 13, 1990) is also included.
